Chex is a breakfast cereal. And let’s face it, its rather boring. No mascot, and the cereal itself is a bunch of small cubes with holes in them. No commerical will get customers to buy it. Or will it? In 1996, Chex was brave- they made a video game based off of doom (yes, an FPS) put it in the cereal and advertised. Then their sales went WAY up. I mean WAY WAY up, not under 100%, but OVER 100%. The boring cereal was taking off!
Graphics:
The graphics aren’t great, they really need some work (like my graphics would be in a 3d fps, only much better). The game’s graphics are fairly similar to doom 1 and doom 2, known to be some of the first FPS games on the computer. Now, you have to remember here, its 1996.. Graphics power isn’t that high for FPS games until later.. The graphics don’t hurt your eyes and they are nice to look at, but they need improvement (wait, they can’t be improved, can they?) So what am I going to do about graphics? 7/10, I guess.
Sound:
Music in Chex Quest varies depending on which level you are on. Each track is very good and matches the feel of the level and the game overall. Here’s the bad part though- there weren’t any sound effects, or at least for me (sound with old dos games is weird on my computer sometimes). Its ok though, because that means the game can’t be ruined by them being too loud. Also, there are many options for how to play the music, and if you want to turn it off or not, etc.. But the music is turned off if you don’t turn it on beforehand in a setup exe, if you ever download it. 8/10
Gameplay:
You are a piece of Chex Cereal, only you aren’t boring! You happen to be able to run, walk, climb, and shoot. Why do you need to? All your friends (doughnuts and other cereal pieces like you) are trapped by an evil alien race- so what are you going to do? No, not kill them, its a kid friendly game. You blast them back to their own dimension. That’s better.. So anyways, you run around the level sending the aliens back to their own dimension (which, for the sake of this review I will abbreviate as STABTTOD) ,finding keys to open doors, opening doors, finding secrets, and of course, more STABTTOD. So its somewhat exploration based, and somewhat like a maze, but mostly a FPS. The game is probably not good for the age group, because of the whole maze part, and they might get stuck and lost, or even frustrated. The par time is pretty hard to beat (you get nothing if you beat it, lose nothing if you don’t) even for me, and this is supposed to be for small children (but funner for everyone else). It doesn’t really matter about the whole age group thing, and the game is very fun to play. 8.8/10
Replay Value:
The game is very fun to play, and doesn’t get boring fast. If you start to improve on your playing, there are 5 difficulty levels to keep you going. These make up for the fact that there are only 5 levels.. But they are long levels. Each one will take you 5-15 minutes to complete, so there’s a good 50 minutes, and plus, you will spend more minutes if you want to find every last item, secret and STABTTOD (every last one; since a few are hidden). Plus, there are 5 more levels you can also get as an addon (called Chex Quest 2) which I haven’t played yet personally. Overall, the game has a lot of replay for a little cereal box game in 1996. 8/10
Overall:
The game is a very good FPS, that will probably keep you entertained for a long time, and you probably should download it. I’m not going to link to the download though, because there are many downloads and it depends on which ones you trust or not.
8/10.
I was going to get a screen shot, but the game won’t let me. Oh well..
If you liked this review, I will also review the addon, Chex Quest 2.
