The DKC Games: Series Showdown

26 06 2009

DKC stands for Donkey Kong Country, a classic game series on the SNES. Or was it? Did it deserve the excitement and attention it got?

DKC 1
The one that started it all, one of the best SNES games ever.
Graphics: Beautiful 2.5d style, at least, beautiful for the SNES. 10/10
Sound: Classic music, but the sound effects weren’t the greatest. 8/10
Gameplay: Extremely fun, challenging, but not frustrating 10/10
Replay: Very many levels and secrets, 8/10

DKC 2
eh, its ok..
Graphics: Beautiful 2.5d style like the 1st one. 10/10
Sound: Not as good as the first, and sound effects weren’t the greatest. 7/10
Gameplay: Not as fun as the first one, but still good, very frustrating, considering the fact that the coins you get from SECRET MINIGAMES are the only way to save (3 coins to buy a save). 7/10
Replay: Very many levels and secrets, wait, you already spent half your time looking for these to get the coins. Right… 7/10

DKC 3
Fun while it lasts.
Graphics: You know that its a beautiful 2.5 d style. 10/10
Sound: Better than the second, worse than the first. 7.5/10
Gameplay: Division of gameplay: 5/8 levels: normal levels like in dkc1 and dkc2. 3/8 of levels: One trick ponies. Don’t worry though, you are so lucky as to get the one trick ponies in the very end, so the normal levels are first.. Wait.. That also means the one trick ponies are 3 times as hard… And they are not fun at all… Which makes it frustrating.. And unfortunately enough, this game is ADDICTING!! (which is not always a good thing!) But as the subtitle for this section indicates, the 5/8 levels were AWESOME. 7/10
Replay: Lots of secrets, but since 37.5% of the levels are one trick ponies that you won’t want to go back to, that leaves you a few less levels to play through again. 7/10

So I hope you can interpret what I’m trying to say here. DKC 1 is the best, the others WOULD be, if they fixed the huge gameplay problems. I hope everyone can learn from these mistakes, and not make them in their games.

Thought all the DKC games were bland, repetitive, uninspired run-of-the-mill platformers which did nothing new or interesting and got very boring very fast. They only got attention because of the pre-rendered graphics which have not dated well at all (Personally I found them ugly to begin with). Yoshi’s Island came along with it’s unqiue graphic style, fun gameplay and so many unique and imaginative tricks that made many people take notice of the SNES again despite the Playstation and Saturn having already come out. Things like the effect when Yoshi was ‘drunk’ and the graphic effect when being in the frog stomach. Nice programming tricks that actually added to the already interesting gameplay. But Rareware wouldn’t know anything about that.
