The GMU’s Favorite Game: Round 1, NES

29 06 2009

I thought we could have a GMU Favorite Game of all time. The first poll for this is games for the NES. Then it will go to other ones and then slowly progress into the finals. Then, one game will come out at the top, as the best game of all time. Of course, the best games for each console will also be winners, they just won’t receive the
RULER OF THE UNIVERSE AWARD

Ok, so here they are:
Super Mario Bros.: The mario game that started it all, the first time we heard of some random chubby character named mario, who happened to be a plumber and later would have half a million more jobs.

Legend Of Zelda: The first zelda game. Zelda was in trouble, rescue her, and whatnot, go through the dungeons.. An excellent game.

Metroid: Enter Samus Aran, the Nintendo character you would NOT want to meet in a dark alley if you happen to look like an evil alien.

Kirby’s Adventure: One of the last NES games. While it was not the first in its series, some argue that it is the best. Play as kirby, the hero of dream land, who can fly and steal superpowers. Uh oh.. I hope he doesn’t steal my computer’s electric power…

Super Mario Bros. 3: Some people say this sequel is the best mario game ever, some say its the best NES game ever, some say its horrible and they’d rather wave their arms til’ they break on the wii…

Mega Man 3: Even if it doesn’t win, I still have to give this game the prize for ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!! Its known to be one of the toughest games of all time.. But still great.

So, who are you gona vote for?

28 06 2009

Want your character in GM Racers 3d, the game where all the game maker characters join together in a huge racing game? Well, the time’s not up at all! You can still have your character in. If you want your character to be in this 3d racer, comment on this post with the following:

Link to the game the character is in
What you want the stage to be like
(if you want) a 64×64 BACK VIEW of your character in a kart.

The DKC Games: Series Showdown

26 06 2009

DKC stands for Donkey Kong Country, a classic game series on the SNES. Or was it? Did it deserve the excitement and attention it got?

DKC 1
The one that started it all, one of the best SNES games ever.
Graphics: Beautiful 2.5d style, at least, beautiful for the SNES. 10/10
Sound: Classic music, but the sound effects weren’t the greatest. 8/10
Gameplay: Extremely fun, challenging, but not frustrating 10/10
Replay: Very many levels and secrets, 8/10

DKC 2
eh, its ok..
Graphics: Beautiful 2.5d style like the 1st one. 10/10
Sound: Not as good as the first, and sound effects weren’t the greatest. 7/10
Gameplay: Not as fun as the first one, but still good, very frustrating, considering the fact that the coins you get from SECRET MINIGAMES are the only way to save (3 coins to buy a save). 7/10
Replay: Very many levels and secrets, wait, you already spent half your time looking for these to get the coins. Right… 7/10

DKC 3
Fun while it lasts.
Graphics: You know that its a beautiful 2.5 d style. 10/10
Sound: Better than the second, worse than the first. 7.5/10
Gameplay: Division of gameplay: 5/8 levels: normal levels like in dkc1 and dkc2. 3/8 of levels: One trick ponies. Don’t worry though, you are so lucky as to get the one trick ponies in the very end, so the normal levels are first.. Wait.. That also means the one trick ponies are 3 times as hard… And they are not fun at all… Which makes it frustrating.. And unfortunately enough, this game is ADDICTING!! (which is not always a good thing!) But as the subtitle for this section indicates, the 5/8 levels were AWESOME. 7/10
Replay: Lots of secrets, but since 37.5% of the levels are one trick ponies that you won’t want to go back to, that leaves you a few less levels to play through again. 7/10

So I hope you can interpret what I’m trying to say here. DKC 1 is the best, the others WOULD be, if they fixed the huge gameplay problems. I hope everyone can learn from these mistakes, and not make them in their games.

Top 5 Most Ingenious and Unintentionally Ingenious Things About Video Games EVER.

23 06 2009

Quote of the day:
‘”Crap”, “rubbish” and “Sonic the hedgehog” are synonyms too. ^_^’~ NAL

5. Ingenious- Tennis For Two- In the 50s, pinball was the craze. Pong wasn’t out til’ the 70s, so people in the 50s were entertained by pinball and music. Until, one brave scientist came up with an idea.. How bout if we have a game that’s not pinball? And the world was saved from bordem. Created in 1958, Tennis For Two is the FIRST VIDEO GAME. Whatever your idiot friend tells you, PONG WAS NOT THE FIRST VIDEO GAME!!! And neither was Spacewar!. Pong was 1972, Spacewar! was 1962. It certainly makes sense for this to be on the list.

4. Ingenious – Bringing Gaming Home- Video Games were in the craze now, mid 70s, arcades packed with people, and games like Pacman and Space Invaders. Its 1977, and Atari makes a big decision- make it so video games can come to you, instead of you coming to video games. They came out with the Atari 2600, and it was smooth sailing- almost everyone had an atari, it was just like that, like yesterday’s version of the DS. And then, something happened. That changed the way we thought about video games forever!

3. Unintentionally Ingenious – ET For the 2600- You’re probably wondering ‘huh?’ or ‘That was the worst game ever!’. And it was, but it was good. After ET was released, things were BAD for the video game industry. It was North American video game crash of 1983/84. That was not good, just to let you know, google it for more information, but I’m just gonna say this- they were back to pinball. Then, something happens. Hope? Nintendo was here, with their NES to save the day. If ET had never came out, atari wouldn’t have gone out of business, and would be on atari 5 million by the time the NES came out, and then nintendo might have gone out of business, and we would’ve never had great games like mario, LoZ, or any of our nintendeo favorites.

2. Ingenious- Don’t let nintendo steal the spotlight!- Imagine, NES, everything going great- or is it? What if you had a brain malfunction and hated mario? There wasn’t very many alternatives, until sega came. Then there still weren’t any alternatives (see NAL’s quote) until Sony came out with the PlayStation. Yayz! We has alternatives! *NOTE: There were non-nintendo games, but most were awful*

1. Ingenious- 3-dimensional. One day nintendo says some strange gibberish no fans can understand, in a very excited voice, and instead of hearing roars of yays, they instead heard ‘huh’? Nintendo translated from technospeak to english- ‘We can make 3d Games!’. Then, Star Fox (aka Starwing in Europe, or its N64 sequel, Lylat Wars ) Mario Kart, and a few other games were born- and the start of a new way to play video games.

Ok, that’s it for today, except this poll:

How to Win at Guitar Hero On Tour (DS) and a few other things

22 06 2009

Sad because your friends always CREAM you? No worries, just follow the top 5 tips.

5. This is NOT THE SAME AS ALL THE OTHER GUITAR HERO GAMES!!! It requires a completely different style of play. I can barely play on hard on GH4, but play expert GREAT on this.

4. Find a comfortable position. Don’t hold your DS so you break your wrist! You can’t win if you are in immense pain, so find the position where you are comfortable, and can play well. Not just holding the DS, but also holding your pick, too!

3. DON’T ROCK TOO HARD! This is important. If you have the problem of rocking so hard you REMOVE THE GAME, then fix it. If you pull the GBA thing out, its GAME OVER!

2. Practice makes perfect! You will NEVER beat a person who’s been playing this game for a year if you just bought it. Start on easy, then medium. If a difficulty is SLIGHTLY too difficult for you, and you sometimes fail, but the other difficulty is too easy, play the harder one. Its better practice.

1. Hold down the notes! I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this- people don’t hold down the note BEFORE the strum, but they press it at the exact same time, then let go, even on streaks. If there are more than one of the same colored notes, DON’T LET GO OF THE FRET! Also, if you see a note coming, go ahead and hold down the fret, and when it finally reaches you, strum.

I hope those tips will help you! Also, I FCed a song on expert today in Rock Band Unplugged, and I’m fairly sure I’m the first person to do so (because the game was just released about two weeks ago) here. See?

Or if your computer blocks that, YAY

BTW, Nintendo did NOT release SSB for VC today or Cave Story for wiiware.

Danny Johnson Does it AGAIN! (and other stuff)

21 06 2009

Danny Johnson, Guitar Hero world record holder, recently just beat Guitar Hero Smash Hits. The one released just a little while ago. Not only did he beat it, he beat it with 100% FC (and probably the world record) for each song! This guy is amazing, you just HAVE to see the youtube. It can be found HERE. This guy is just INSANE. He holds the record for highest score in GH at over a million on a SEVENTEEN MINUTE SONG. Absolute INSANITY!! You guys have no hope at a GH record, even if you are really good, because Danny’s the best GH player ever.

And now that’s pretty much it, but here’s what you’ll see in the next few weeks:
5 most ingenious things about games of all time
A review of SSB for the VC? (if it comes out in NA tommorow, I know everybody accept NA has it, its no fair!!)

Making a Difference in our World Today

20 06 2009

Recently WordPress has started up a program where you can choose a charity and make money for that charity on your blog, just for small things like getting lots of views. I chose to support the Whaleman organization, an organization whose aim is to stop whale hunting and things of those natures. By visiting the GMU frequently you will make a difference in thousands, maybe millions, of lives; just not human ones. But why should we think we are so much better than those whales that we should just let them die out, the same as some people think? I don’t think so. By visiting the GMU now, and clicking on our Whaleman banner at the bottom of our sidebar on the right, you will make a difference in the lives of whales.
You can see how well we are doing with the task on the banner too. After we save a few whales, and make some money for the orginization, I may change it to something else, like invisible children. I don’t know. But I do know, you guys are making a difference now.

Bugaham Games :)

EDIT: I switched to the Whale one, because everyone else isn’t, so the whale could die out. :(

Review of Super Smash Brothers Brawl

20 06 2009

Super Smash Brothers Brawl, commonly abbreviated ‘SSBB’ was announced a few years back by nintendo at E3. After that, it was eagerly awaited by millions of fans, but was it worth the wait? Would it have been better for those fans to just stick with melee? Some people wondered that, and after getting the actual game- they realized it WAS worth the wait, except for those stupid people who gave the game a one on amazon, (seen HERE) whose reviews are actually FUNNY to read (on the most part). So, did SSBB live up to its hype? Read the review to find out!

Graphics: If you’ve ever played a wii game, you’d notice the fact that almost everything has low detail. Nintendo’s been lowest on the graphics scale for a while now, so its nothing new. If you’re expecting ps3 quality graphics, you’re in for a big surprise, but these graphics are some of the best graphics I’ve EVER seen on the wii! The effects were pretty good, and the characters were highly detailed, along with the backgrounds, tiles and pretty much everything else. For the wii, these graphics were great! The only thing is, the characters like kirby and pikachu look pretty much the same as in melee. You can barely tell a difference. But the rest of the graphics are awesome anyways, so 9/10.

Sound: There’s no way to describe the music in this game. Its just perfect. You’ll have to play it yourself just to see how good it is. Each stage has 3-5 music tracks, and there are at least 10 tracks not in the stages. In all, there’s at least 100 tracks, so its a wide variety of remixes from your favorite games and new songs, composed for SSBB. The sound effects themselves were perfect, and at the perfect volume, so it didn’t disturb the music. This is probably the best sound in ANY wii game. 10/10

Gameplay: Super Smash Bros is a strange kind of fighter. You do not have health, for one, so its not street fighter and all those games all over again. In the SSB games, you play as a nintendo character against other nintendo charaters. You have a percentage meter, which starts at 0%. You gain percent from taking hits, and get it back to 0 with items (which can ((and should)) be easily turned off) and the higher your percent, the further you fly when you get hit. To win, you have to knock your opponent off the stage as many times as you can, depending on the mode. so SSBB requires alot of strategy too. Will you be cheap? Will you find the perfect strategy for defeating those puny little kirbys? Or will you run away while your opponents duke it out between themselves, and come in at the end to finish it off? To make it even more challenging (*cough* and cheap *cough*) there are items like pokeballs (which send out pokemon to attack you) and smash balls (which characters attack, and once it is killed, gives the charcter who delivered the final blow a super-owning attack that is almost always a 1 hit KO). I HIGHLY suggest turning items off. That’s pretty much how you play, but its much more complex than it sounds. It is incredibly fun to play alone, but the best game on the wii if you have friends to play against. 9/10

Replay Value: The game has these modes: Classic, where you fight opponents to move on to the next opponent, finally making it to the end boss (1player) Event, where you try to complete a certain task in over 20 events (1-2players), Adventure, where you navigate different levels, killing enemies along the way, trying to save the world from an evil subspace bomb, eventually making it to the boss of all bosses. Finally, there is Brawl. If you have friends, this is probably what you’ll do 99% of the time. Its just a normal fight, nothing special, but somehow, due to the magic of SSBB, it NEVER gets boring. While this game will only take about half a week to unlock everything, Brawl mode keeps it going. The fun never stops, unless you have no friends. 8/10

Overall: With friends: 9/10, the best game on the wii for sure. You are CRAZY if you don’t already own it.
Without friends: 8/10, a great game that will for-sure keep you entertained for a while, and should definitely be in your collection of wii games.

I’m happy to say it DID live up to its hype. ;)

Blog Statistics

19 06 2009

Please note this is all approximate.

When I first started this blog: awful, around 1-10 uniques a day
Second month of my blog: best month, 20-70 uniques a day (one day it would be 30, the next 70…)
Third-Sixth month: decent, 35-65 uniques a day
After that: downhill! 15-20 uniques a day (Probably because I posted infrequently)
Now: I’m doin BETTERZ!! 20-40 uniques a day (and its still rising..)

The month of June has been one of the best months since the blog started falling a bit. So far, I’ve had about 350 uniques so far, and if I countinue at this rate (let’s say 20 uniques a day) then that should mean that the blog is back in the statistical running and better than the 500 some uniques in the month of September, but that may or may not happen.

Thanks for everyone who reads this blog, because without you guys, this blog wouldn’t be here. :)

Review of BUMPS by Spenny_007

19 06 2009

Bumps is a GM-Made puzzle game by Spenny_007. It is also entered in the 2bee Games Competition, and is in the finals. If Spenny’s wonderful game wins this competition, he’ll get a publishing deal on a console, and some cash so vote for him in the link above. Now, onto the review.

Graphics: This game’s graphics are beautiful and artistic, yet simplistic. The graphics are just eye-candy and pleasent to look at. They really fit the game’s cutesy feel well, and were just the style needed. 10/10

Simply beautiful!

Sound: This game has a wide variety of music in it, each going along with the theme and feel of each stage (Given by the backgrounds of each level) sounding beautiful. While the music was great, the game did lack somewhat in sound effects, and I think it would be better if a few more were added. 7.5/10

Gameplay: The game is very simplistic at the core, only made very complex. The idea is you collect all the keys by positioning a ball. That’s it. But, there are various powerups and objects that stop you, such as a bridge, a wall, and more. Also, it makes it even more complicated that only the characters the same color as the key could pick up the key (eg, red gets red, green gets green). While it is a somewhat complicated game, it is very fun and entertaining- until you get stuck. The game can be very frustrating at some points, when you can’t beat a level- there’s no hint system of any kind, its all you, trying just to find you failed. Since the game is very fun, but frustratingly difficult at points, 7/10

SO FRUSTRATING!!!

Replay Value: The game has only a few levels before you have to buy it, but if you do buy it, there are more than 80 more levels. So it really depends on whether you like the game enough to fork out the cash to buy the full version. It would have been nice as freeware though. 8/10

Overall: The game provides some nice entertainment, and is very pleasing to your senses- until you get frustrated. Other than that and the fact it costs money for most of the levels, it is a very nice game and is something you should definitely download.

You can find BUMPS right here, at yoyogames.com, and have some nice entertainment for an hour or so, or longer if you choose to buy the full version.
